McCREA SELECTED TO CONTEST AT WESTMINSTER ELECTION

Edwin Poots and Ian McCrea

At a meeting of the Mid Ulster DUP Westminster Association on Tuesday 24th February 2010, Ian McCrea was unanimously selected to contest the forthcoming Westminster election. Speaking after the selection meeting, Ian McCrea said:

"It is time to reverse the neglect of this constituency at Westminster. For too long the people of Mid Ulster have been badly served by an absentee MP who fails to represent us in the House of Commons. Recent election results have shown that the DUP is the only party that can bring change to Mid Ulster. I am the candidate that stands for real and meaningful change for our community. Only the DUP can topple the absentee incumbent and return proper representation for our community. I am pleased that my party colleagues in the Mid Ulster Association have shown faith in me by unanimously selecting me as the DUP candidate. I am looking forward to the election contest and I would urge everyone to vote for change by giving me their support.

It is important that everyone understands what is at stake in this election. Do we want another four years of being misrepresented or do we want someone who will actually work for the people of the area?”

Edwin Poots MLA who chaired the selection meeting said:

“The DUP is looking forward to the forthcoming General Election. The Hillsborough Castle Agreement represents a major advance for Unionism. We have ensured that there will be no Sinn Fein Justice Minister. We have delivered devolution of policing and justice on Unionist terms – securing the independence of the police and the courts. We have moved decisively to address issues of concern for the whole community. In Mid Ulster, we have many former part time reserve police officers. Our party is ever mindful of the contribution these brave men and women made to defeating terrorism. That is why we have delivered some £20million for recognition payments for those who served their community in this way. We have a record of delivery to take to the voters for their judgement that stands head and shoulders above anything the others have to offer. People will face a choice in this election in Mid Ulster: more of the same or positive change. A vote for Ian McCrea is a vote for real change.”
